Oh bother…

So, my blood sugar took another dive.  My most excellent doctor (Dr. Jordan @ East Lake Pediatrics), is concerned.  He consulted with the Neonatologist in the hospital.  So, she came up and checked me out.  She agrees I’m sleepy, but doesn’t think there is any infection, rhesus factor issues, or things like that (which cause hypoglycemia), but she’s going to do a CBC/WBC just in case. In the interim, I’m going to have to get about 10-20 mL of formula before each “feeding” (although given I’m always eating, I’m not sure how that will work).   Also, Mommy will call the nurse before every feeding and the nursing staff will do an instant blood sugar check every four hours before my feeding.Daddy was out picking up my birth announcement pictures when the results came back on my blood sugar from earlier tonight.  When Mommy called and said what was going on and how there were nursing issues (the nurse admitted she was really busy and couldn’t keep up) and when last night a 31 for blood sugar was a crisis and tonight was treated by the staff kind of … well… not very seriously… Daddy made Mommy call the Hospital Admin and express patient safety concerns.  He was very nice and called the Unit Nurse and things started to get much better relative to Nursing care.  Daddy also called Dr. Jordan and he made several phone calls and things are shaping up nicely for care.  Thanks to the Hospital Admin & Dr. Jordan, Mommy’s nurse is actually the charge nurse and we’ve a baby nurse assigned to me :)The Neonatologist arrived promptly, listened to the ‘rents concerns, listened to their observations, and then did a careful exam of me.  I didn’t like it, but I feel better for the medical attention.  My blood test just now, 7:55 pm, is 47.  Not great, but passable.  Now I’m giving a try to Similac Advance.  The Enfamil I didn’t like at ALL.  ICK! ICK! ICK! ICK!  This stuff, well not as good as Mommy’s product, is at least tolerable!  Yea!  I’ve downed 48mL of the stuff.  That’s about 3.5g of carbs :)Now, Nurse Vicky is here to draw blood for my CBC, WBC, etc.  See all my peeps later!

Hanging Tough

Last night was a wonderful rainy night, the kind that just makes you want to curl up in a ball and tuck under the covers. Well, not for Mommy and me.  Mommy was doing very well and even got her catheter out last night at about 6pm. The nurse told her she had until midnight to use the potty. No big deal… Mommy downed glass upon glass of water and other liquids. At 12:30 the nurse said, okay I am going to get the new catheter. Mommy bee-lined for the potty and was successful, FINALLY! As for me… at around 11:30 last night they checked my blood sugar again and it was at 31! UGH! They had Mommy give me more of that nasty formula stuff (I make a grimace face when I drink it). 30 minutes later my level was tested again at 36! Not high enough. They took me to the nursery and drew a VERY tiny vial of blood and sent it to the lab to get “their” glucose number. Still 36! They hemmed and hawed over it and were talking back and forth with the pediatrician at the hospital for about an hour. They suggested one more test just to check before they did an IV or gave me straight glucose. Of course my number was 85! Phew! I had Mommy a nervous wreck… probably why she couldn’t pee!  Sugar level at 4:30am was 54 and not much concern. They asked Mommy to give me about 5ml of “icky formula” every time she nurses me. FUN FUN FUN! I spit most of it out.  I am nursing like a champ now, but only when I am HUNGRY. Otherwise Mommy is just a giant pacifier. I like it that way! I got plenty of rest and am not fussing as much when they prick my foot every 3 hours. Mommy got about 3-4 solid hours of sleep, broken up over 12 hours! hehe Sorry Mommy, that’s your job. Good news is that Mommy has no more monitors hooked up to her and she can get around the room much better. She still has the IV in the arm but it is basically disconnected… still irritating her wrist when she holds me to nurse. It shall pass…   Today I have a fun filled day of seeing lots of different doctors come and go. So for now, back to sleep for me!

I’m here…

I’m finally here! 🙂 🙂 🙂

Mommy & Daddy decided to call me Emmerson Carrington Reed.

So, I was born at 9:25 am 16-Jan-08. I was pulled out from having my feet nice and deep in Mommy’s ribs. It’s good that Mommy had a repeat C-section! I had the cord wrapped (but not snug) once around my neck and I was BIG!!!! 8 pounds, 14.6 ounces. 21.25 inches. My head is 15″ and my chest 14″. My APGAR was 8. I had low blood sugar (44 when they want at least 45) so I had to take a little formula. My blood sugar went up nicely. Later on it dropped again (to 40) so I had to have a bottle mixed with glucose. Yum 🙂 Sugar! 🙂 It’s been up and down all day so we’ll have to keep an eye on it 🙁
